The Community Advisory Board of the Brookdale University Hospital MC
In compliance with regulations to New York State laws enacted in the 1960s, it was required that a Community Advisory Board of the BUHMC be up to 51 percent consumers of services rendered by the hospital, to advise the New York City Commission of Health and the hospital concerning its ambulatory care programs.
A list of community residents was developed. This list represents established, operating organizations/agencies and consumers of emergency services and ambulatory care services within the five Primary areas served by the hospital: Brownsville, Ocean Hill, East New York, East Flatbush, Canarsie and Crown Heights. Together, with members of hospital administration, this formed the Community Advisory Board which held its first meeting on September 23, 1970.
The purpose of the Community Advisory Board of the BUHMC is to:
1) Identify and bring forth for discussion problems affecting patient care in ambulatory care areas.
2) Identify health issues in the communities that can be addressed by the administration and staff of the hospital.
3) Plan, develop and implement community outreach informational and educational programs.
4) Work in conjunction with community groups/agencies and hospital administration toward the betterment of the community and hospital.
5) Review and investigate, through its Grievance & Recommendation Sub-Committee, all patient complaints, comments and concerns. Under its guidance, appropriate action is to be taken for resolution and improvement of services.
The Community Advisory Board of the BUHMC meets the first Monday evening of each month, excluding July and August.
An open community meeting is held annually during June.
