Nursing and Patient Care

At Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, nursing is a highly regarded profession and our nursing staff pride themselves on their professionalism and compassion.

Nursing for the Inpatient
As an inpatient, you will have both professional registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide you with the care to help you on your way to recovery.  Ancillary nursing personnel--including nursing assistants (NAs), orderlies and unit clerks--assist the nurses in taking care of you.

The titles of all nursing staff are stated on their ID badges, or you may ask them to tell you.

A Nurse Manager is the registered nurse in charge of 24-hour nursing  care on your floor.  His/her name, office location and phone number will be given to you on a card when you are admitted.  The nurse manager is responsible to see that your nursing care needs are met around the clock and is usually on duty during the day shift, Monday through Friday.

There are Charge Nurses on duty during evening and night shifts on all units.

If there is a problem that cannot be solved by the nursing staff assigned to your direct care, please speak to the Nurse Manager. If the manager or the Charge Nurse is not available on evenings or nights, you may ask the operator or a nurse to page the administrative supervisor.

Private Duty Nurses
In some instances, if you need special nursing care, you may want to have a private duty nurse, or your doctor may recommend one.  These nurses are not members of our regular staff, but are obtained through professional registries, and are paid direct by the patient.  To request a private duty nurse, ask Admissions or your Nurse Manager for further information.

Shifts for private duty nurse are:
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
4:00 p.m. to midnight
Midnight to 8:00 a.m.

OR

8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
8:00 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Ambulatory Care  Nurses
Registered nurses are also essential in seeing that you get quality and compassionate care when you are an outpatient, whether you are receiving services from our Ambulatory Surgery Suite or our Brookdale Family Care Centers , or our many other ambulatory care services.
