Clinical Laboratories

Chairman / Herbert L. Elliott, MD

The Department of Clinical Laboratories is chaired by a physician certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.  The technical staff of the department includes a PhD clinical chemist and is supported by qualified supervisors and bench personnel with technical expertise in clinical chemistry, toxicology, DNA/RNA diagnostics, endocrinology, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis, radioimmunoassay, hematology and blood banking.  The laboratories are staffed by professional and technical personnel seven days a week, 24 hours a day.  A phlebotomy team is available every morning on all inpatient units.

The Clinical Laboratories recently moved into a completely updated facility, one that is designed to accelerate test processing and expand the laboratories' capabilities to treat the growing population of both primary care patients and patients with chronic conditions.

The laboratories are fully computerized so that the results of over 1,000,000 profiles per year are immediately available in all clinical divisions. The laboratories keep pace with changing technologies, and accuracy of test results is assured through an elaborate monitoring system that includes an at-the-workbench quality control program.

Meetings with the Resident staffs of all departments are scheduled on a regular basis in order to maintain ongoing communication with the clinicians directly responsible for patient care.
