Director of Medical Education for Osteopathic Programs / Shepard H. Splain, DO, FACS
The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center extends its long history of quality education to students currently enrolled in all colleges of osteopathic medicine, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In affiliation with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, The Brookdale University hospital and Medical Center has, since 1986, offered 12 postgraduate positions in an osteopathic internship program.
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved internship program is an intensive, broad-based first postgraduate year that offers in-depth exposure and progressive responsibility in the major medical disciplines of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and emergency medicine. The program can be tailored within AOA guidelines to fulfill the requirements of the PGY-1 year in many accredited residencies. Of course, the classic rotating internship, with emphasis on primary care, remains as a standard.Clinical clerkships for third- and fourth-year osteopathic students complete the training cycle. Clerkships for third-year students are in the core curricula of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry and obstetrics/gynecology. Rotations for fourth-year students are available in all specialty and subspecialty areas.
