Scientific inquiry & clinical skills
The Department of Anesthesiology offers a program that places emphasis on the basic sciences—physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and anatomy—all an essential background for a career in anesthesiology.
Faculty members from other services within The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center and its affiliates, as well as invited guests provide clinical instruction in anesthesiology, as well as cardiology, echocardiography, electroencephalograph, pulmonary function studies and a range of medical topics, including pain management. Residents regularly attend didactic lectures given by the department and invited guests, and time is made available to them to attend lectures in other medical specialties.
Every effort is made to teach Residents to become competent anesthesiologists, eligible for certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology and its subspecialty boards. With assistance and guidance from the faculty, Residents participate in national scientific meeting. Residents are also encouraged to participate in research projects that lead to presentation, scientific exhibits and publications in major journals. The department has a very active research division that presents papers at most recognized national meetings. Residents are encouraged to participate in research projects and attend these meetings as presenters or exhibitors. The focus of the fourth postgraduate (CA3) year can be designed with the Program Director to satisfy the individual interests of the resident. These tracks may include neurosurgical anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, regional anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, pain and intensive care.
