Department of Dental and Oral Surgery
Acting Chairman / Kathleen L. Agoglia, MS, DDS
The Department of Dental and Oral Surgery offers postgraduate opportunities that go further and deeper than traditional programs.
The program, now more than 40 years old, has graduated outstanding practitioners who have demonstrated the highest skills in oral surgery, diagnosis treatment planning, implantology as well as all of the others special disciplines in dentistry. Many have gone onto separate, significant faculty positions and others have become well known as lecturers and authors.
In all aspects of the training program, Residents assume levels of responsibility commensurate with individual ability and commitment to the educational and clinical programs of the department. Residents can expect to have managed a wide variety of clinical problems by the completion of their training. For instance, residents perform oral and maxillofacial surgery under the tutelage of the oral surgery staff and scrub with members of the Department of Surgery on head and neck and ENT procedures.
Particular benefits of the program are in-depth experiences in fixed prosthodontics, molar endodontics, periodontal grafting and surgery, and advanced orthodontic and surgical procedures. Physical diagnostic skills will grow, and there is the opportunity to teach and supervise visiting externs. The unusual benefits and capabilities acquired at Brookdale have had demonstrated value throughout the practices of our graduates well beyond the time spent in training.
Special Highlights
Pediatric Dentistry
One of the oldest Programs in Pediatric Dentistry is based at our hospital. The Program length is two years and leads to Board Certification. Though the emphasis is in behavior management, the residents have responsibility in physical assessment and care of admitted, ambulatory and various sedation modalities. Rotations in Pediatric Medicine, Anesthesia, Orthognathic surgery and cleft palate are but a few of the learning experiences. These lend to a well rounded pediatric dentist who is capable of working both in a private or hospital or university based program.
Oral Implantology
Almost every variety of implant is inserted at Brookdale. There is emphasis on surgical care, as well as the prosthodontic management of patients, particularly during the implant clinic conducted under the supervision of the department chairman. Our Oral Implantology Program is AAID approved.
Orthodontics
This is one of the few hospital-based programs in which orthodontists serve in a supervisory capacity. Residents, thus, have ample opportunity to carry out major and minor orthodontic procedures.
Emergency Medicine
The Dental Department offers emergency services on a 24-hour basis. A resident is assigned daily to the Emergency Department, an aspect of the program that provides important education in general and emergency medicine, physical assessment and total patient care, and a one month, off service rotation.
Anesthesia and Sedation
Each Resident rotates one month in the Department of Anesthesiology and is instructed in the principles of sound anesthesia practice.
