The Department of Pediatrics offers a three-year residency in primary care pediatrics that meets all requirements for certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.

The pediatrician’s role in health maintenance is a critical one. There is no greater satisfaction than to develop and maintain a relationship with a child and his or her family, and to help guide this child into productive and healthy adulthood. The successful pediatrician is not only interested in acute illness, but is a partner with the parents in ensuring the growth and development of the child, and is a wise counselor in times of health and in times of distress

In keeping with the commitment of the department to primary and comprehensive care, the program emphasizes significant experience in ambulatory pediatrics, as well as supervisory experience and subspecialty rotations. The Pediatric Residents in the primary care program participate in the care of patients in six hospital-sponsored family care centers located throughout the community.

There are 35 hospital based pediatrics who share responsibility for supervision of patient care, teaching and research, including specialists in adolescent medicine, allergy, cardiology, child development, critical care, pediatric dentistry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, neonatal perinatal medicine, nephrology, neurology, pulmonary medicine, psychiatry, radiology, school health pediatric surgery. The staff also includes the house staff comprises 42 Resident positions.

The department provides a wide range of medical and health services for infants and children. There is a major emphasis on patient care and on providing comprehensive training to medical students, house staff and students in other health-related fields. A well-balanced research program encompasses clinical investigation.

The department is responsible for: a 38 bed inpatient facility that includes a pediatric intensive care unit’ a special care unit where children may be isolated; an adolescent unit; a newborn service that has two general nurseries, a premature nursery and a neonatal intensive care unit; the pediatric services of the six Brookdale Family Care Centers; a comprehensive child care program; the Bruner Development Disabilities Center; and a range of special medical rehabilitation programs for children.

Divisions and/or Sections: Adolescent medicine, allergy, cardiology, critical care, child development, pediatric dentistry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, hematology/oncology, neonatal perinatal medicine, nephrology, neurology, pulmonary medicine, psychiatry, radiology, school health and pediatric surgery.

Number of Resident Positions: 42 Resident positions.

Staffing: 35 hospital-based pediatricians who share responsibility for supervision on patient care, teaching and research; 70 board-certified voluntary pediatrics.
