The Department of Psychiatry offers a four-year General Psychiatry Residency Training program and a two-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program, both fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Adult Psychiatry
The primary goal of the training program in Adult Psychiatry is to equip the graduating psychiatrists with the special knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to practice ethically and effectively in the field of general psychiatry. The program is committed to graduating residents who are fully biological, psychological, and socio-cultural aspects of psychiatry.

Clinical Rotations
The clinical rotations are designed to provide residents opportunities to work with diverse patient populations; to develop increasing levels of skills under supervision; and to progress from required clinical experiences to any o a wide variety of elective rotations.
PGY-1:
The PGY-1 year includes 4 months of training in Internal Medicine and 8 months of introductory Inpatient Psychiatry.
PGY-2
Residents spend 2 months in Neurology, 2 months in Consultation/Liaison, 2 months in Emergency Psychiatry, 2 months in Addiction Psychiatry, and 4 months of advanced Inpatient Psychiatry.
PGY-3
Residents spend this year in Outpatient Clinics and treat adults, adolescents, and children. They develop skills in all 5 required psychiatric treatment modalities. In addition, they conduct group therapy and family therapy.
PGY-4
Residents choose electives to tailor the final phase of training to their individual needs, interests, and professional goals, while continuing their outpatient rotation on a part-time basis. They also complete rotations in forensic psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and community psychiatry. A chief residency is offered to two residents who have distinguished themselves for academic excellence and leadership.
Admission Policy
Applications, submitted through ERAS, are reviewed during the fall. Selected applicants are invited to take and entrance examination. Interviews are conducted from October until December.The general requirement for admission is graduation from a medical school approved by the American Association of Medical College. International medical graduates must be fully certified by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Applicants who have completed one year of approved internship in internal medicine, pediatrics, family practice or psychiatry from an approved ACGME training program, may complete the program in three years.To graduate from the program, and to be eligible to sit for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology examinations in Psychiatry, residents must complete 48 months of approved training, including a PGY-1 year. All residents are required to complete a research project before graduation.
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program is designed to expose residents to every area in child and adolescent psychiatry and to help them develop professional excellence in the prevention, evaluation, and treatment behavioral and emotional disorders in children and adolescents of different ethnic groups.
Clinical Rotations
Year-1:
Residents are assigned to the Child Day treatment program, the child outpatient clinic, The Bruner Developmental Center, and pediatric emergency psychiatry services. Residents also work with children and adolescents at various schools in the community.
Year-2
The 2 nd year includes 4 months of training in Child Inpatient Psychiatry at Brookdale, 4 months of rotation in Pediatric-Consultation and adolescent Extended Observation Bed unit, 2 months of training in Pediatric Neurology, and 2 months of electives. Residents continue their work in the outpatient clinic and carry forensic cases.To graduate from the program, residents must complete 24 months of approved training and present the results of research project.
Number of Resident Positions: 20 in General Psychiatry; six in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Staffing: Medical Faculty includes 29 full time psychiatrists, 20 of whom are Board certified in Adult Psychiatry, some of them hold additional Board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry. A substantial number of Social Workers and 7 Psychologists (Ph.Ds) participate in the training of residents.
Facility Highlights: The department is the primary facility for the prevention and treatment of psychiatric problems in the community. It has two adult inpatient units, an adult continuing day treatment program, a geriatric mental health service, for adult Extended Observation Beds, a child inpatient unit, 2 Adolescent Extended Observation Beds, a Child Day treatment, a Comprehensive adult and child outpatient and outreach programs.
