The Department of Surgical Services offers a five-year residency program in General Surgery that fulfills training requirements for certification by the American Board of Surgery.

The department is headed by a full-time chairman and 3 associate chairmen. The staff includes 13 full-time board-certified Attending surgeons and 19 board-certified voluntary surgeons, all of whom have academic appointments at the State University of New York Heath Science Center at Brooklyn.

In addition to general surgery, the department includes active subspecialty services in surgical critical care, neurosurgery, surgical endoscopy, otorhinolaryngology, oncology, vascular, thoracic, colorectal, pediatric, head and neck, and hand and plastic surgery. Each service is staffed by full-time or part-time Attendings certified in their specialties. All divisions and specialty sections conduct separate outpatient clinics.Residents work under close supervision with a large variety of clinical material to permit progressive development of surgical maturity. Because Brookdale is a Level I Trauma Center in the New York City Emergency Medical Services system, Residents gain extensive experience in the management of major trauma to round out their training and fulfill the certification requirements in general and specialty surgery.

Facilities include 75 dedicated surgical beds for patients, with all of the private beds included in the residency training program. There is a 12-room operating suite where more than 9,000 general surgical procedures are performed annually. In the same period, the hospital's active Emergency Department handles more than 100,000 patient visits. The 9-bed surgical intensive care unit is under the direction of intensivists who are board-certified in Critical Care. The specialists are ably assisted by a dedicated cadre of skilled critical care nurses, and supported by daily bedside rounding from the clinical departments of Radiology, Anesthesiology, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine. An 8-bed stepdown unit complements the SICU care.
