All members of the staff participate in weekly conferences. The Department of Urology is responsible for a large clinical service that includes both inpatient and outpatient units, and an active clinical and basic science research program. Its activities are based in the Chernow Urological Research Center, a self-contained facility that includes an urological operating room with two cystoscopic rooms equipped with image intensifiers, TV monitoring and videotape recording potential. It also has its own recovery room, renogram room, clinical laboratory, urological conference room, library and urodynamics laboratory, as well as examining rooms and offices for the staff. The urological suite has its own staff, ranging from orderly staff to a nursing supervisor, all of whom are permanently assigned to the department. The area is immediately adjacent to the urological inpatient floor in the Comprehensive Health Care Center and is close to the clinical laboratory unit where the urological research laboratory and animal operating rooms are located for the department's use. A full complement of urology is covered throughout the four years including urologic oncology, urologic trauma, endocrinology, infertility, sexual dysfunction, neurourology and urodynamics, female urology, pediatric urology, and renal transplantation. These services are offered with state-of-the-art technology and surgical techniques including the Candela laser to fragment ureteral calculi, the KTP-Yag laser and Indigo Laser for benign prostatic hyperplasia, as well as the transrectal ultrasound to diagnose various prostatic and infertility disorders. The transrectal ultrasound has become the standard in urologic care when performing biopsies of the prostate to diagnose carcinoma of the prostate gland, and it is used frequently within the department.
During the four years of training, Urology Residents spend 42 months at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center and six months at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, where they are exposed to that facility's transplantation, radiology and pediatric urology services.
